I am looking at putting on Moana Jr. next year and am wondering if Maui could be cast by a female? I have the same problem as so many middle schools across the country: lack of males to fill roles. Please let me know if this is a possibility or if it causes licensing or cultural issues.
Thanks!

Hi there! Yes, you can absolutely cast a female in the role of Maui as long as the gender remains male and is played as male. A female actress can shine as Maui, as long as no pronouns or names are changed in the script and she respectfully plays the character as male. Have a blast with this fantastic show!
