Inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC made its Broadway debut in 1973 under the director of Harold Prince and starred Glynis Johns as Desiree and Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt.
For more than 25 years, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC has remained a stand-out in Sondheim and Wheeler's canon of work as an example of true originality and high craft in musical theatre. As a team, Sondheim and Wheeler are perhaps best known for their macabre thriller SWEENEY TODD, but fans of the demon barber will delight in the high-spirited beauty of Sondheim's score, the wit and playfulness of the lyrics, and the twist and turns of Wheeler's exceptional book. No less a social commentary than SWEENEY TODD, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC closely examines the relationships between husbands and wives, stepmothers and stepsons, friends and neighbors and is at once subtly cutting and sweetly charming. Topped with an expansive set and period costumes in creamy white designed by David Farley, Nunn's revival promises to capture the feel of a Scandinavian summer as well as the faded glory of the well-worn, yet beautiful actress Desiree.
